Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is a global standard developed to move information over the wireless Internet. It is supported by all of the world's major wireless manufacturers - including Ericsson, Lucent, Nortel, Motorola, and Siemens. WAP defines a set of protocols used in application, session, transaction, security, and transport layers. WAP is especially designed for a wireless environment. Existing web page code is too intense for the small screens used on handheld appliances and for today's relatively narrowband wireless networks. WAP was designed with the form factor of the handheld device in mind - its restricted power consumption, small display size, limited memory, and lower-powered CPU. It is also designed to help overcome the inherent difficulties in wireless networks - less connection stability, less predictive availability, less bandwidth, and more inherent delays.
